An Attack Leaves 10 People Dead In A Mozambique Village

An attack leaves at least 10 people dead in Mozambique. Since March 2020, Islamic terrorist groups have increased their activity on the border with Tanzania, causing tens of thousands of displaced people.

At least 10 people have been killed in an attack carried out by a suspected group of jihadists in Quiwiya , a village in Mozambique near the coastal city of Palma , along the border with Tanzania . The local authorities have been in charge of informing this Monday of the attack that took place on May 28 . As it is an isolated area, the facts have not been known until now.

During the attack, five people were beheaded and another five were shot and killed . Most of the deceased were fishermen and merchants . The attack, which has not yet been recognized by any group, ended with the burning of houses in the village, leaving the inhabitants out in the open. According to local sources, the victims fled to a nearby wooded area after escaping the attack.

Repeated attacks
The intention of the terrorists is to take over the city of Palma , an important national port. The attacks are a continuum in this area of the country. Just a few months ago, the city, just 12 kilometers from Quiwiya, was attacked and set on fire by terrorists loyal to the Islamic State .

The actual death toll in the offensive is still unknown. The attacks have already caused tens of thousands of displaced people , who disembark daily in the island city of Pemba.

Since October 2017 , the province has been the scene of attacks by Islamist militiamen known as Al Shabaab , unrelated to the homonymous group that operates in Somalia and that maintains ties with Al Qaeda . Since mid-2019 they have been claimed mostly by the Islamic State in Central Africa (ISCA), which has increased its attacks since March 2020.

Despite all this, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) postponed at the end of May its decision on sending troops to Mozambique to confront jihadism in Cabo Delgado , where Palma is located. The decision will be made at an extraordinary summit to be held on June 20 in this same country.
