Sysmex’s PA-100 AST System Speeds Up UTI Diagnosis and Targets AMR with Precision

Diagnosing UTIs in 15 minutes and selecting effective antibiotics within 30, Sysmex’s PA-100 AST System is transforming patient care. Spanish healthcare projections suggest large-scale savings, and the system’s recognition via the £8 million Longitude Prize underscores its global relevance in tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Sysmex’s PA-100 AST System is advancing the future of urinary tract infection (UTI) diagnostics by delivering rapid, reliable results in under an hour. Using leading-edge nanofluidic technology combined with fast-track antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), the system allows clinicians to make timely, evidence-informed decisions that benefit both patients and healthcare systems.

UTIs remain a global health concern

Over 400 million people suffer from UTIs annually, placing a significant burden on individuals and health services worldwide. Traditional diagnostics can be slow and often lead to blanket antibiotic prescriptions, which risk contributing to antimicrobial resistance. Sysmex’s solution offers a major upgrade, achieving 84% sensitivity and 99% specificity — ensuring clinicians can prescribe the right treatment, faster.

Alain Baverel, President & CEO Sysmex Europe SE, remarked,
“The PA-100 AST System represents a pivotal innovation in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. By providing clinicians with rapid and precise diagnostic insights, we can transform how urinary tract infections are treated globally. This tool not only benefits patients but also strengthens the financial sustainability of healthcare systems.”

Spanish budget impact study highlights savings

According to a recent financial modelling exercise, national adoption of the PA-100 AST System within Spain’s public health system could result in cost savings of approximately €323 million in the first year. The majority of these savings are linked to fewer complications, hospital stays, and associated productivity losses, with greater financial benefits anticipated over time.

Takashi Ono, Member of the Managing Board and Senior Executive Officer & Managing Director of Sysmex Corporation, commented,
“By addressing one of the leading causes of antibiotic misuse, Sysmex’s PA-100 AST System aligns perfectly with global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance. The system empowers healthcare providers with the data needed to make the right decision at the right time, benefiting patients and public health alike.”

Prestigious Longitude Prize signals breakthrough

Recognised for its innovative contribution to antimicrobial stewardship, the PA-100 AST System earned the £8 million Longitude Prize — an international award granted to technologies fighting AMR. The win reflects its potential to reshape infection treatment on a global scale.

Compact design, swift performance

The system’s palm-sized cartridge can detect bacteriuria in just 15 minutes and recommend effective antibiotics 30 minutes later. This streamlined workflow allows healthcare professionals to intervene early and accurately, preventing complications while curbing the unnecessary use of antibiotics.
