For the first time in the UK, this spring will offer audiences a unique opportunity to experience 10 select stage works from Asia, available in cinemas and online. Global Stage on Screen™, an innovative programme initiative by NGO UK-China Film Collab and ATW, showcases 10 HD recordings of recent top stage and dance productions from East Asia. The selection features a mix of well-known Western classics reinterpreted in an Eastern style and original stories that are less familiar to the local audience.
This programme features performances from prestigious groups such as the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, and the National Ballet of China. Highlights of the repertoire include celebrated works such as “Giselle”, “Uncle Vanya”, and “Electra”. With a burgeoning stage arts audience in Asia, predominantly under thirty-five, there’s a clear passion for both Western classics and original local productions, showcasing a keen interest in global cultural narratives.
Global Stage on Screen™ will provide UK audiences a rare glimpse into the top performing arts of the region from afar. This touring programme is an ideal platform for sharing a mutual appreciation for the performing arts across continents.
Dr Hiu Man Chan of UK-China Film Collab shared her excitement, stating, “This is quite a personal project for me as I have the opportunity to work alongside my counterpart to introduce these productions the UK screens which, combines all the arts I appreciate. British stage productions on screen have always been very popular among the Chinese audience and I hope our UK audience will gain an insight into the way how shows are performed nowadays in Asia and their current standard.”
The season will kick off with a UK Premiere of the 4K recording of “Giselle” by NBC in Mayfair, London, with nine additional screenings both in cinemas nationwide and online.
