The UK’s initiative to equip homes with smart meters gained significant traction in January 2024, with a 30% increase in installations over the previous month, totaling 221,000 installations.
This remarkable increase also denotes a 21% improvement from January of the previous year, marking the most significant number of January installations since the onset of 2020, ElectraLink’s recent publication reveals.
This resurgence in new meter installations is hailed as a noteworthy recovery, presenting the highest January installation figures since the Covid-19 pandemic initially hindered the rollout.
ElectraLink’s historical data recalls a stark decrease in April 2020, where installations dwindled to 12,000 due to the implementation of social distancing measures.
Since the smart meter rollout’s inception in 2012, ElectraLink has documented a total of 22.48 million installations. The regions traditionally leading in installation numbers continued their strong performance in January, with East England reporting 27,000 installations, southern England with 25,000, and the East Midlands with 21,000.
