DiscoverCars.com has examined its internal data to explore the most popular car brands being rented in different countries around the world.
To do this they reviewed almost 500,000 car rental reservations through their website and analyzed the countries renting the largest portion of specific car brands and models.
The data revealed that both Volkswagen and Toyota ranked as the most popular car brands worldwide, with both brands boasting an impressive total of 20 countries each that prefer their various models.
Toyota was particularly favored in eight different US states including; Hawaii, Maine, New York, and South Dakota. 69% of car rentals in Montana were also Toyota models.
In New York, the Toyota Camry model was the favorite accounting for 13% of rentals. Elsewhere, the Toyota Carolla was the most popular in Montana and Maine.
Toyota was also popular in countries such as Canada (29%) South Africa (32%) and Thailand (41%).
Volkswagen reservations were the highest in the European country of Croatia with 22% of reservations. In Croatia, the most frequently chosen model was the VW Polo, making up 11% of the car rentals in this area.
Elsewhere, Volkswagen was well-received in Kansas where the VW Jetta proved most popular.
The Kia and Hyundai brands were both popular in different parts of America. Firstly, Kia models are most popular in the states of Idaho, Wyoming, South Carolina, and Colorado to name a few.
Idaho in particular saw 71% of its car reservations being a Kia model, the most popular model was the Kia Rio.
Hyundai was the go-to choice in Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, and North Dakota. Minnesota had the largest portion of car rentals being a Hyundai model with 42%, the most popular model in this state was the Hyundai Kona.
Lastly, six US states chose a Chevrolet as their model of choice when renting a car including Wisconsin (48%) and Iowa (71%). In both of these states, the Chevrolet Malibu is the preferred model.
