The Eczacıbaşı Group’s VitrA Tiles has been distinguished for its pioneering integration of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, securing a place as the first ceramic producer in the World Economic Forum’s Global Lighthouse Network, a testament to its leadership in 4IR adoption.
VitrA Tiles, the leading ceramics division of Türkiye’s Eczacıbaşı Group, has joined the esteemed ranks of the Global Lighthouse Network (GLN), being acknowledged as a Factory Lighthouse among 21 new entrants. This honor in the World Economic Forum’s initiative spotlights VitrA as an innovator in manufacturing.
At the Davos Summit awards ceremony on January 15, 2024, speeches were delivered by Atalay Gümrah, CEO of Eczacıbaşı Group, and Hasan Pehlivan, CEO of VitrA Tiles. They discussed the role of technology-enhanced operations and the expansion of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies within their production frameworks.
This accolade is particularly notable, as VitrA Tiles is the inaugural company in the ceramic tile industry to be recognised by the World Economic Forum for its effective use of 4IR technologies.
Innovation and Growth in the Face of Challenges
On this momentous occasion, Atalay Gümrah, CEO of Eczacıbaşı Holding, expressed his excitement, stating, “We are thrilled that our Bozüyük Production Facility has been selected as one of GLN’s Factory Lighthouses, in recognition of the leadership we have shown in deploying Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. Facing disruptions in manufacturing from climate change, a volatile financial landscape, and geopolitical crises that have led to fluctuating energy prices, particularly in Türkiye, this recognition underscores how we looked at these challenges not as setbacks, but as catalysts for further innovation and growth, harnessing 4IR to enhance our operational competitiveness.”
The GLN represents a coalition of manufacturing frontrunners utilising 4IR technologies to transform their production sites, supply chains, and business models, achieving significant financial and operational gains. Factory Lighthouses exemplify the successful application of manufacturing innovations, enabling them to overcome volatility and achieve comprehensive success.
Digital Transformation Roadmap Drives Outstanding Improvements
At the Bozüyük facility of VitrA Tiles, a focused digital transformation strategy emphasised intelligent process and production controls. This initiative resulted in a 19% improvement in Overall Equipment Effectiveness, a 56% reduction in scrap, a 14% decrease in energy consumption, and a 43% increase in the use of recycled materials over the previous year.
Reflecting on this accomplishment, Hasan Pehlivan, CEO of VitrA Tiles, remarked, “While our solutions might be unique, the challenges we face are global, and we recognise the value of a global community in solving global challenges. The future of manufacturing is not about just one company, or one sector, or a single country, but about bringing the global community together to address major challenges. I believe the GLN has much to contribute to this journey, and I welcome this excellent latest initiative from the World Economic Forum.”
Artificial Intelligence Reshaping Global Manufacturing
In an era of rapid technological advancement, growing geopolitical tensions, and escalating climate concerns, members of the Global Lighthouse Network are embracing state-of-the-art technologies to boost their efficiency and sustainability. Utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning, these Lighthouse factories are at the forefront of a manufacturing revolution. Remarkably, 85% of Lighthouse factories reported less than a 10% decline in revenue during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating resilience far surpassing that of their counterparts in the manufacturing sector.
These pioneering Lighthouse factories are charting a course for significant global influence in manufacturing. By integrating innovative solutions into their extensive networks, they are leading the way towards a sustainable future and ushering in a new era of lasting, transformative change. This strategic focus on innovation is redefining the manufacturing industry, underscoring the vital role of advanced technology in addressing the challenges of our time.
