Two nurses spoke to Whately directly about the current health service pressures. They discussed how patients are not safe and the stress that the profession can cause.
Ryan Whittier stated: “I have been a nurse in the NHS for 24 years, and I’ve never seen it in this crisis.”
We have 48,000 nursing positions available. Our wards do not offer safety. We are screaming and telling patients that they are unsafe. The government is doing nothing about it.
“Strike days are for patients to be safe, but what about nonstrike days? When we can’t care for our patients?”
Maxine Ward, another member of the strike committee, stated: “Your government should enter talks with Royal College of Nursing because it is humiliating we have a duty to do so. The fact that we even had to strike in the first place, after everything we have been through as a profession over the past few years.. .”
She stated, “I don’t believe this government appreciates the exhaustion and frustration of the nursing staff here in this country, because we can’t do our jobs.”
Later, the shadow minister for health will be appointed Wes StreetingHe asked the minister to fire him. – Refers to the government’s plans of introducing anti-strike laws, which could lead to the dismissal health service workers who have failed to provide a minimum level service during the strike.
The Labor MP said: “You are now threatening to fire these people for failing to meet minimum standards on strike days. Can we sack you, the Minister of Health or the Prime Minister for failing to meet any national standards on non-strike days?”
What did he say that the government was listening to NHS staff?
She said: “We are listening and I hear you about how difficult it is.
“I am a nurse and come from a family of doctors. I use the NHS and it’s me and my family.”
He then added, “We have a wage-review process that is independent from government to determine a fair wage level, recognizing of course the need for employees to be rewarded…but we also need a level that the country can afford.”
She encouraged nurses’ unions to “negotiate” and “participate in the wage review process, so that it can be right for the next years.”
