After Australia’s “pathetic” decision to withdraw from the ODI tour due to Taliban’s treatment women, there has been a political spat between the cricket boards and cricketers of Afghanistan and Australia.
Australia and Afghanistan were set to play three ODIs in March at neutral ground in United Arab Emirates. Cricket Australia (CA), however cancelled the series following “extensive discussions”, including talks with Australian officials.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), angered by the incident, issued a heated 450 word statement condemning Australia’s “pathetical, unfair and unanticipated” decision. However, it did not mention women’s cricket.
Their players are also there, including captain Rashid Khan who has threatened to quit the Big Bash League. He has been playing for Adelaide Strikers since 2017. Naveen-ul Haq, a teammate who has previously played for the Sydney Sixers, and Sydney Thunder, made a move. Others moved forward, pointing out the interruption to the faltering competition.
CA has pulled out from matches against Afghanistan many times before. CA cancelled the 2021 first men’s Test match between these two countries in Hobart because women had not been given equal access to sport after the Taliban tookover in August that year.
