What did the census reveal?
There are more than 1.3 million lesbians, gays, and bisexuals in England and Wales – approximately 59.6million people.
This equates to 1.5% of the population being lesbians or lesbians and 1.3% being bisexual.
Around 165,000 people identify as having “other” sexual orientations. This includes heterosexuals and asexuals.
The census showed that 0.5% of respondents (262,000) identified as their gender. It was different from their sex recorded at birthIt is very.
It also revealed that LGBTQ+ people are present in every local authority, with the highest rates being found in London, Cardiff, Brighton, Hove, Brighton, Hove, and Lambeth.

ONHS Director of Population Jane Woolford said: “We have presented these questions as a reflection that our society is becoming more diverse, but also because there are now clear user needs for more information about the kind of diversity and richness of our population.”
The last census in Scotland is expected to take place this year. Northern Ireland’s will, however, will include questions about sexual orientation and gender identity.
