Bhupinder Singh Gil made history Wednesday night by becoming the first ever Sikh Punjabi assistant referee in the Premier League Premier League Toy.
Singh Gill managed Southampton’s 1-0 defeat by fellow strugglers Nottingham ForestSaint Mary’s.
He followed in the footsteps his brother Sunny Singh Gill, who earlier in the season became the first British South Asian referee of an English Premier League match after their father Jarnail Singh was the first to wear a turban. EinglishHistory of Major League Soccer
Speaking during the build-up to the match, Singh Gill said, “This has to be the proudest and most exciting moment of my refereeing journey so far, but I’m not going too far because it’s just another step in the direction of where I want to be.
“My family is also very proud and excited for me. I wouldn’t be in this situation if it wasn’t for my dad, who supported me throughout my journey and was a great role model for me.”
Forest won the match due to a goal by Taiwo Ohni at the 27th minute.
