Few people could have predicted that Arsenal v Newcastle on the 3rd of January would be a crucial match for the Premier League title race. But, here we are.
Manchester City will be 10 point behind Arsenal if they maintain their perfect domestic league record. However, Arsenal will need the league’s best defense to win. Newcastle have a poor record against Arsenal, but their only loss in the league this year was to Liverpool in stoppage time. Arsenal knew well that Eddie Howe’s team was very fit and hard working after being beaten at St. James’ Park in May.
This result confirmed Arsenal’s inability to qualify for Champions League. There is still a chance for revenge. Arsenal have scored 43 points out of 48 this season. They also scored seven victories over West Ham after Garbel Jesus’ injury.
Fans dream of winning the first league title since 2004. However, the primary goal was to finish fourth in league. With another win tonight, Arsenal will be 16 points clear of Tottenham in 5th. Mikel Arteta doesn’t have to make any changes. Oleksandr Ziinchenko and Ben White will be dropped at Brighton in order to conserve energy.
Hu must decide whether to give Alain Saint-Maximin a start after August, when the winger had returned from injury. Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson, and Miguel Almiron will form a front three that can threaten Arsenal’s high line. Both Brighton and West Ham enjoyed success with direct shots behind William Saliba or Gabriel. Arsenal will make another quick start to score first, and Newcastle’s counter-attack strategy will be lessened.
