According to the BDMLR, it was alerted by Scarborough Sealife staff about Thor’s arrival in North Yorkshire on 30 December at 11:30pm. Their initial response was “Are you kidding?”
She claimed Thor moved as the tide moved, and that there were fears at one time that he was heading towards a public road at the top.
She also noted that he showed “normal male behavior” during the evening.
The report said: “By 4pm (on 31st December) Thor had become a bit more active, and at 4.30pm he sat up, turned and slid immediately into port.
“A cheer erupted from the crowd as BDMLR medics scrambled with radios to trace the direction in which he went. This was helped by some local youths who saw him swimming and we confirmed that he swam out of the harbour.”
She stated that most visitors behaved well, but the police had the to deal with “a few difficult people in public and one person who tried to break a cordon and enter private property to reach the walrus for photographs”.
The BDMLR said: “The kind public asked many questions, offered and bought hot drinks and food, and appreciated Thor’s protection, with the vast majority respecting our visitor immeasurably.
“At all times the crowd was at least 350 dense, at one point there were apparently over 500 with more bodies constantly appearing from all the roads, roads and even bus trips.
“It was estimated that approximately 2,000 people were present throughout that day, but it is possible that there were many more.”
