How long does it take for results to be seen from a new exercise program?

Best says that the length of time it takes for a new exercise regimen to show results depends on how structured it is.

“If you are focusing on a running program, for instance, you should see an improvement of your cardiovascular capacity and adjustment in your resting heart rate as your fitness improves, within weeks,” she says.

“If you’re beginning a strength training program, an alternative is to allow at least six weeks for consistency. This will give your body enough overload so it can improve.”

Is consistency really the key?

While each person’s exercise needs will be different, consistency is essential. It’s important to find ways that you can stay motivated.

Best states, “Whether you are starting a Couch-Running program or joining a CrossFit group to master barbell complexes and get into work, the biggest mistake people commit is getting into too much work.”

“In general, sticking to three to five quality workouts (depending on form or goal) per week is a realistic goal.”

Experts recommend that you also consider lifestyle choices such as getting enough sleep and taking more steps every day.

Best states that “Unfortunately, a large part of the fitness industry still focuses on selling quick-fix solutions. This can make it difficult to feel good if you don’t have the perfect abs as advertised after 12 weeks.”

She suggests that exercise be considered a form self-care.

Remember that exercise is linked to improving your mental health. Your training can be viewed as self-care and not as a punishment that only works if you see results. This will help to reframe your motivation.

“Motivation is not linear – it is normal to feel the ebbs and flows. Try not to fall off the wagon completely – this is where a lot of people struggle, because it is very difficult to get back into training after a big break.”

Best suggests that you may need to increase your running distance or lift heavier weights to continue your progress.

“Being part of the community can really help drive results. The members of my online community, Ladies Who Crunch, are not competing with each other, but there is a system of group accountability and support to help keep everyone moving forward.”

How can you keep your balance?

Finding the time in your schedule to exercise is the biggest challenge when starting a new exercise program.

A great way to stay motivated is to exercise at the same times or on the exact same days each week.

Best advises, “Assign blocks in the journal and don’t allow it to become too flexible as it can take over other commitments.”

Don’t take on too much at once. “Focus on the essentials. No matter what level of fitness you are, everyone needs adequate sleep (sleep) as well as proper nutrition (nutrition). Choosing these boxes will build a solid foundation for progress,” adds Best.

Find your tribe. You might feel lonely starting a new exercise regimen. It will be difficult to stick with it if you don’t have a sense for accountability. This could be being part a community or attending a regular group class with a friend.
