Director of the Information Office of the Holy See Matteo Bruni said: “I inform you with sadness that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away today at 9:34 in the monastery of the Mother Church in the Vatican.

Bruni, who said Thursday that the former pope’s health was “serious”, made this announcement.
Pope Francis, his successor, said to his Vatican audience on Wednesday that he was “very sick” and added, “I want a special prayer for Pope Benedict who silently supports The Church.”
“We ask God to comfort and support us in our testimony of love for the Church until the end.”
According to some reports, Francis visited Benedict after his public performance.
On Wednesday morning, the Vatican revealed that Benedict’s condition had deteriorated rapidly due to age. However, he was still receiving continuous medical care and was “under control”.
Benedict, the head of Catholic Church, resigned in 2013, in an almost unprecedented decision. He cited “advanced aged” as a reason for his decision.
This was the first occasion since 1415 that a pope has resigned, rather than remaining active in office until his death.
He was known by the title Pope Emeritus. He continued to live in Vatican, dedicating his time to prayer and meditation, while still wearing the white papal garb.
He kept his papal title rather than changing to his birth surname Joseph Ratzinger.
The former pope also said to his followers in 2018: “In the slow decline in my physical strength, i am inwardly on an pilgrimage home,” via an Encyclical published in Corriere della Sera, Italy.
In 2020, the Vatican spoke out on Benedict’s health and revealed that he was suffering from “painful but not severe” amid media speculation.
