Sarkis states that the “Age of Punk” is a misleading portrayal of people setting healthy boundaries. “While direction means well, we should not be distorted by the step we take away from pleasing others to prioritize our own needs and well-being.”
She asked, “If you always please others but don’t satisfy your own needs, then who is really evil?” Perhaps ourselves? Is that good? The answer is yes. It isn’t.
She mentions that burnout (think: vacation, work, and family stress) is a key driver of this goal of people-pleasing. “wSarkis says that we are beginning to see this shift as a result of years, if not even generations of conditioning to put others’ needs before our own.”

Resistance is only possible with rest
“ILoving [this] trend, and I want to encourage people to lean more in the direction of rest—sleeping, napping, doing things that fill you up—as a form of resistance against oppression, against patriarchy, against all kinds of things,” Taisha Caldwell HarveyShe is a licensed psychotherapist, and the founder and CEO of black girl doctorThis is an online platform for therapy and wellness.

Transparency about the diagnosis
While this has certainly improved year over year, Games says it noticed in 2022 that more people were taking to TikTok to share their mental health diagnoses — whether that’s what led them to get help for bipolar disorder or how ADHD manifests. They are not paying enough attention to them.
“I suspect [this] It removed some of the stigmas and some of the shame and possibly the guilt associated with visiting a therapist or taking medication for psychological reasons.”
Games said that although the stigma hasn’t disappeared, these types of videos have helped to reduce it. She said it helps put a realistic face to some diagnoses that carry stigma — like autism or postpartum depression.
