Strep A: 122 deaths across all age groups in England over the past four months

According to the UK Health Security Agency, 25 of the deaths were children under 18.

There were 33,836 notifications between September 19th and December 25th. scarlet fever.

The last season with a high number of cases was 2017-2018, but overall there were 30,768 cases of scarlet fever over the course the year.

Strep A, a common type bacteria, is commonly found in the throat or skin.

Although most infections are mild and easy to treat, some can cause serious conditions like scarlet fever or invasive group A streptococcal disease (iGAS), which could lead to death.

According to health officials, symptoms of scarlet fever that you should look out for in your child are a sore throat and headache, fever, and a mild, pink or sandpaper-like rash.

The rash can be more difficult to see on darker skin but can still be felt using sandpaper.

Dr Obagi Edger, Director of Incidents for the UKHSA, said: “We are still seeing a rise in scarlet fever and ‘sore throats’ and that’s understandable for parents.

“However, I would like to stress that the condition is easily treatable with antibiotics and it is very rare for a child to become more serious.

“During the winter there are a lot of diseases circulating that can make children very unwell, so it is important to avoid contact with other people if you are feeling unwell, wash your hands regularly and thoroughly and catch your coughs and sneezes into a tissue. I urge everyone who is eligible to receive free winter vaccines.
