A fire at a Cambodian casino hotel caused the deaths of at least 10 and injured 30 people, police said on Thursday. ThailandFire trucks were dispatched to fight the blaze in a crowded border region.
After being caught in a Grand Diamond City Casino fire, videos posted to social media showed people jumping from windows. the hotelPoipet is a border town. Public radio in Thailand reported that many Thais were trapped inside.
The fire that started Wednesday night at midnight was still burning on Thursday morning.
At least 10 people were reported to have been killed and 30 others were hurt, some seriously, according to Maj. Gen. Sethi Loh of Banteay Meanshi, the provincial police chief.
He said that 360 emergency personnel and 11 fire engine have been dispatched to this site, and that rescue teams are still searching for the victims.
Sethi Loh claimed that the cause was still unknown. The casino employs approximately 400 workers.
Thai PBS reported that 50 Thais were trapped in the casino complex, both as employees and customers. It stated that the Cambodian authorities had requested help from Thailand to put out the flames. They sent five firefighting and 10 rescue vehicles.
Poipet, located in western Cambodia near the wealthy Thai city Aranyaprathet is home to a bustling trade and tourism.
Thai PBS reported that the emergency department at Aranyaprathet Hospital was overcrowded and that other victims needed to be transferred to other hospitals.
