The West Midlands Police stated that it was believed that the victim was out and about with friends when he received a group of people approaching him.
Sydney Power, 23 years old, from Birmingham, described seeing “groups if lads” who were looking to cause trouble when he arrived at the club. He said: “As soon a my friends and me walked in, it seemed very strange and the atmosphere was not good.
“There were groups of lads everywhere, most of whom seemed very moody. Many of them seemed to be looking for trouble. They were clearly not there to enjoy the music.”
Detective Michelle Thorgood, who is leading this investigation, stated: “This was an innocent young man having fun with his friends on a night out boxing, and our thoughts are with him and his family today.
“We know there were hundreds of people in the nightclub at the time. We have spoken with a few of them, but we still need to hear about anyone who was there to witness or record what happened.
“We believe that the victim was approached and stabbed by a group of people. We are working hard to identify all those involved.”
The force also stated that the victim’s family was informed and that they will be supported with specialized officers.

Closed-circuit television is used to monitor the nightclub’s activities and the detectives encourage anyone in the vicinity to call them. Police say that neighborhood officers will patrol the area in the next few days to provide safety and security.
In a social media post, Crane said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened that a man lost his life last night as our Boxing Day approaches.
As part of our investigation into this crime, we are working closely with West Midlands Police. We encourage anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist West Midlands Police to contact them directly.
In the wake of the attack, the club cancelled its New Year’s Eve celebration. Police stated that the scene is still closed while evidence is being gathered.
A Crane spokesperson said: “We have a comprehensive search policy in place for any and all patrons entering and leaving the venue. This policy includes metal detectors, searches as well as pocket checks, purse checks and bag searches. It also includes age verification procedures such as the use of metal detectors. Guidelines for Social Impact Assessment and Best Practices are followed when conducting searches.
“The place is guarded by SIA security personnel who responded to the incident as it occurred at night. The relevant CCTV footage is with West Midlands Police. We are happy to assist with any inquiries.
“On Boxing Day, we had a team led by on-site paramedics, as per venue policy, who arrived at the scene quickly to provide first aid to the victim until the ambulance service arrived.
We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the victims, their families, and friends. We will continue to work closely alongside West Midlands Police.”
