King Charles’s first Christmas message broke all records for television viewing, becoming the most viewed Christmas speech by monarchs since official records began twenty years ago.
The King’s Speech was also the most watched Christmas TV show with a combined audience exceeding 10 million viewers.
It was twice as popular as Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special, which was viewed by 5.4 million viewers.
King Charles gave his first speech as monarch and spoke out about the cost-of living crisis, including those who use food banks. He also paid tribute to his mother, Queen Elizabeth, who died in September.
The King appeared naturally in the inaugural of his annual addresses to nation. From 1957, his mother broadcast an annual televised speech. A documentary about the royal family was broadcast one year in 1969. Before television, the Queen delivered it via radio on Christmas Day.
The broadcast was viewed by 8.1 million people on BBC One, 1.5million viewers on ITV, and 929,000 viewers on BBC Two.
The third most-watched Christmas TV program was a festive version Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel. It drew 4.8M viewers, while Call The Midwife drew 4.4M.
The BBC had a great day in terms of ratings. Doc Martin’s Christmas special on ITV attracted 3.3 million viewers. Doc Martin was seventh. This means that all six of the most-watched programs were from the BBC.
Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special attracted only 2.5 million viewers, continuing a downward trend for the once divisive program that was the most viewed on Christmas Day.
Charlotte Moore, BBC Chief Content Officer, commented Categories. She said: “The ratings win on Christmas Day marks the incredible centenary of the BBC’s global content.
“In a time when there is so much competition and choice, the BBC continues its role as the UK’s entertainment destination for Christmas Day.”
