Moscow stated that three people were killed by a drone attack from Ukraine on the Engels military bases in Russia.
According to reports, the drone was shot down by Russian bombers. However, the falling debris caused serious injuries.
After reports of explosions at the base, a local governor stated that the “accident” at an air base located hundreds of km from the front line in the war in Ukraine was under investigation.
According to Russian and Ukrainian media, explosions were heard at Engels Air Force Base in early Monday morning.
Roman Busargin (region’s governor) stated on Telegram that “there were no emergency circumstances in the residential areas [Engels] city.”
“There is no threat to the population. Civilian infrastructure has not been damaged. Law enforcement agencies are currently looking into the incident at a military facility,” he said.
Two explosions were reported by RBC, the Ukrainian news agency. According to the Russian news agency Baza, residents reported sirens were heard wailing and an explosion.
The attack on two Russian air bases, located 730km southeast of Moscow, resulted in the destruction of an air base near Saratov.
Moscow suffered a major blow to its reputation, and questions were raised about its defenses.
The attacks on Russia by Kyiv have never been publicly claimed by Kyiv. Officials in Ukraine have described such incidents to be the “karma of the Russian invasion.”
