Despite a slow start, her father and mother supported her. She won her first LPGA Tour88 title at The Kelly Girls Open in 1962.
Whitworth stated, “I’m glad to look back because I didn’t succeed right away.”
“When it happened, it was ready.”
She won six major championships, was named Player Of The Year on the LPGA Tour seven more times, and became the first LPGA player with $1 million in career earnings. In 1985, she won her last title at the United Virginia Bank Classic.
Whitworth said, “Winning never gets old.”
Her career was marked by a rivalry against Mickey Wright, a late golfer from the world. Whitworth is second in LPGA Tour wins with 82. Sam Snead and Tiger Woods are tied for the most wins with 82.
Whitworth’s fiercely competitive nature was what set her apart, according to her contemporaries.
“She just needed to win,” Betsy Rawls (another Whitworth competitor) stated on the LPGA Website.
“A lot like Mickey Wright or Louise Suggs. Something drives them. Kathy was very intelligent. It was unacceptable that she made a mistake.”
“She hated her self when she made mistakes. She was great to play with—sweet as she could be, kind to everyone—but man, she scolded herself for something horrible. She was very happy with that.
