Sam Curran has become the most expensive player in Indian Premier League history after being sold to Punjab Kings for £1.85 million (Rs. 18.5 crore) at auction on 2023
Curran attracted bids of six franchises before finally being purchased by Punjab for a record-breaking amount. After being named the player-of-the-tournament during England’s 20th World Cup triumph, the furious bidding war began. The left-armer, who won IPL 2021 with Chennai Super Kings was a versatile T20 bowler who can play in all three innings. He also excelled at death during the World Cup and is an explosive batsman.
Curran was paid more than Ben Stokes, England’s Test captain. Stokes, who was the man of the match for the final T20 World Cup against Pakistan, was sold to Chennai Super Kings for £1.62 million (Rs. 16.25 crore).
Curran’s large fee was another fine day for young English talent at auction. Harry Brook’s illustrious winter continued after he became the number one millionaire at the 2023 Indian Premier League auction, eventually being sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for £1.3m (Rs. 13.25 crore).
Joe Root, England’s second-highest ever scorer, is yet to be sold, just like he was in 2018, which was the last time he had been up for sale. Root was not interested in selling despite signing with Dubai Capitals, the UAE’s new T20 league. This is another example of how franchises are looking for specialist skills in this short format.
Brook scored three centuries in England’s 3–0 series victory in Pakistan, breaking David Gower’s record for most runs scored by an Englishman in Pakistan. He also played every match in England’s T20 World Cup victory against Australia in October and November. However, it was a relatively uneventful event.
