Bendall was seen in such violence at the home of the young family on the night Sept. 18. He took his Xbox and traded for drugs. He then told a taxi driver that the evening had been spent “just chilling with family”.
Bendall confessed the next morning to his mother and she informed police.
The moment he reported that he had murdered four people, police body cam footage was captured. One officer was clearly skeptical and asked him if his mental health was a concern.
The officer then decided to enter.
Prosecutor Lewis Mably KC summarised the scene at Derby Crown Court Wednesday night by saying: “PC Stubbs was completely unprepared for the things he would find. As he moved from one room to another, mounting terror and disbelief were evident.”
He first finds John’s naked body in the bathroom. Next, Mrs. Harris and Lacey are in the master bedroom, and Connie is in another bedroom.
Wednesday saw Bendall plead guilty to the four murders of Lacey and the rape.
He had previously confessed in the past to manslaughter. However, he delayed his claim of murder by engaging with a lengthy exercise to locate an expert who would be willing to declare him ineligible to stand trial.
On Wednesday, the public prosecutor stated that Ms Harris was in the “early stages of pregnancy” at the time she was killed and had already told a friend: “We have good news for you.”
Bendall was sentenced to a suspended sentence for arson in June 2021.
‘Brutal and vicious attacks’
Mr Mably said: “The circumstances of these crimes are truly heinous and appalling.
These were vicious, brutal and cruel attacks on a defenseless mother and her three young children.
They were attacked by the defendant using a clawhammer, which he used to hit their heads and upper bodies.
“It was evident that none of the victims stood any chance.”
Bendall had a relationship with Mrs Harris for 18 months before the murder. The court heard that Bendall’s drug use and erratic behavior quickly made her friends suspicious.
John, Connie, Lacey and Connie set up a booth on the front lawn selling sweets to raise funds for cancer research.
Police believe the attack occurred shortly after 9.42pm when John sent his last message to say he was going on a shower. This explained why he was found naked under the shower curtain.
At 10.50pm, a call was made to Lacey’s by Mrs. Harris’s telephone. It is believed that he was already in possession of Bendall at this time and was trying to locate all the appliances within the house.
He left his house at 5:15 am and took a taxi to meet with a drug dealer. “The defendant offered John’s Xbox to him in exchange for drugs,” Mr Mably said.
Bendall replied that it was not so bad but that it was a little grumpy.
When asked why, he said, “A little crazy but it’s okay.”
Then, he was asked what he was doing and he replied, “Just relax.
Murders that are ‘inexplicable, unmotivated’
Bendall called his mom shortly after 7 AM to inform her of his crimes. The audio recording of the police body camera – but not video – was shown to the court on Wednesday. It captured the horrified reaction of the officers when they entered the bloodstained house and found four dead bodies.
Although they were unable to determine Bendall’s attack order, forensic experts concluded that Lacey was moved from the living room where she attacked Connie to the master bedroom.
Mr Mapley stated there was a “strong indication” that Bendall had also raped Lassie at the bedroom and living room.
Bendall said to Ripley Police Station, “The entire house is covered with claret.”
“I used the Hammer.
“I didn’t know what I had done until i entered my room and saw my mistresses, and my daughter.”
Then he added, “I bet you don’t usually get four murders in Killamarsh, do you? Well, five (murders), because my lady was having a baby.”
Mr. Mapley informed Mr. Justice Sweeney, that the Crown would seek a full life sentence for Bendall due to the gravity of the offenses.
He said, “In light of all this, the prosecution’s presentation of the judgment is that the seriousness of the offense is extremely high, as it falls into the category of a lawsuit that requires the imposition of a life order, rather than a minimum term.”
Vanessa Marshall KC stated that her client agreed to a life sentence. It said Bendall had always claimed that he had no memory about the attack.
“Even though he may have implied that he was controlling Terry Harris, his actions that evening remain largely unexplicable and unmotivated,” she stated.
Jason Bennett, father of John, and Lacey said, “Killing and killing my children and my life has devastated him,” in a victim impact statement that was read to the court.
Connie’s father, Charles Gent, said in his statement: “The killing of my daughter Connie completely tore my life apart. I feel like I’ve become a lost soul trying to make my way through life without her here.”
Angela Smith, Harris’ mother, wrote in her statement that John and Lacey would often tell her they were afraid for monsters.
She said, “I would tell them there is no monsters.” “How wrong was I!”
Bendall is likely to be sentenced on Wednesday.
