Leinster’s whoop-and-maul caused Gloucester many problems – with Ronan Kelleher, the main beneficiary. He scored two of the hosts’ tries in the first period – both strong kicks – and dismissed another with Luke McGrath’s fine move. But the game was over thanks to James Lowe and Josh Van der Vlieer.
Ryan and Van der Vlaer displayed their Leinster skills, with Ryan scoring from close range. Lowe scored from 40 metres after Kellan Dorris, Gloucester captain, had robbed Ben Meehan. Lowe made a charming long pass to Ryan.
The misery in Gloucester was made worse by Henry Walker, a hooker and Ciaran Knight, a young head. They were both dismissed within 10 minutes of each others, with the visitors losing their minds. McGrath came in from behind to give Leinster his sixth try.
Lowe added a seventh, again fuelled from Doris, and it was almost as if a Genesis flood was coming. However, Leinster only added two more attempts to replace Jordan Larmore, Doris, and Jordan Larmore. Outmatched, Gloucester refused surrender completely, with no consolation other that the staunch defenses of Garry Ringrose, Jonny Sexton.
Leinster manager Leo Cullen said: “Gloucester fired at us. Given that our men were fairly clinical. Although it was a great result, Gloucester made life difficult. Two wins on the board made it a happy ending.
Slaughtering the lambs wasn’t quite convenient—the workers had forgotten to fully sharpen the knives—but it wasn’t far off. The Champions Cup is still possible if the Leinster Blades can be sharpened.
