Shay Weiss of Virgin Atlantic called on Liz Truss, Prime Minster, to make tough decisions and increase the value of the Pound.

Virgin Atlantic made aviation history as it received £1 million in government funding to operate the first net-zero transatlantic flight.

The London-to-New York flight, which is scheduled to take off next January, will be powered entirely using Sustainable Aviation Fuels.

SAF, a byproduct of solid waste or food residue, reduces emissions up to 80 percent during its lifetime.

It is considered the most important tool for aviation and should be eliminated by 2050, as the development of environmentally-friendly alternatives such as hydrogen and electric aircraft are still decades away.

Mark Harper, Transport Secretary, said that the project shows “how much can we achieve when we work together towards a common goal.”

According to Estimates from the International Air Transport Association (IATA)Global production of sustainable jetfuel will increase by 200 percent to 300 to 450 million liters.

The industry is still far behind the times, with projections suggesting that net zero will require 450 billion liters by 2050.

So far, the UK has invested £165m to develop five production plants by 2025.
