As the UK government relaxes airport liquids rules, passengers won’t have to worry about how much toothpaste they take on board planes.

The 100 ml limit will now be increased to 2 Liters

Clear plastic bags for toiletries and the removal of tablets and laptops from carry-on baggage at security checkpoints are two other aspects of the biggest improvement in aviation security in 16 year.

“Small toiletry items have become a staple at airport security checkpoints, but all that is about to change,” Transport Secretary Mark Harper said today.

Harper called on major UK airports and airlines to install the most recent screening technology, which uses 3D images to examine the contents of bags, by June 2024.

Despite Boris Johnson’s announcement in 2019, technology rollout has been hit with several setbacks due to Covid.

The system is currently being tested at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, as well as Birmingham.

Airport operators hail the announcement as a “great step forward” for UK air travel.

It will make the journey through UK airports easier and air travel itself more enjoyable,” said Christopher Snelling, director of policy at the Airport Operators Association (AOA) trade body.

In the beginning, airport rules regarding liquids and laptops were introduced to protect passengers. A temporary measure in the aftermath of the 2006 transatlantic plane plot.

Terrorists planned to down several passenger flights between the United Kingdom and North America using liquid explosives in soft drinks.
