This afternoon, the Paris Assizes Court found Bernard Laporte, vice-president of Rugby World Championship, and Mohamed El Trad (Ligue 14 champions Montpellier) guilty of corruption-related charges.
The trial included three other defendants. They were accused of corruption and bribery.
Mohammed Al-Trad was convicted for corruption, influence peddling, and misuse of company assets. He was given a suspended sentence of 18 months in prison, a €50,000 fine, and a suspended ban from working in the business.
Laporte was found guilty of illegal appropriation of interests, influence peddling, passive corruption and concealment of misuse of social benefits. Laporte was given a two-year suspended sentence, a €75,000 fine and a two-year ban on rugby-related activities.
Al Trad – who was not present at the criminal court in the French capital – and La Porte – who did appear – were found to be collaborators when it came to the trad company of the same name to become the first front sponsor of the French national rugby team.
In addition, Chamber 32 found a corruption relationship between the two people that included Laporte voting in favor of Al Trad’s failed bid to buy English First Division club Gloucester, the France 2023 partnership contract, and the postponement of the Montpellier domestic and national match. Shirt sponsor – Al Trad also has a sponsorship deal with New Zealand’s All Blacks.
Serge Simon, accused of illegally appropriating interests, has been released without charge.
Claude Accher was fined €5,000 for concealed actions.
Benoît Rover was also fined €5,000.
