Conversations that are awkward
Fernando Santos spoke out about the awkward conversation he had this week with Ronaldo regarding his being brought down against Switzerland.
“We had a conversation, and it wouldn’t have been too bad if that hadn’t happened.”
“Since I tookover, we’ve had to talk and have close relationships with the players – that is my style.
“He is the captain for our team and stands for Portuguese football, for both the Portuguese people, and for the national team.
I needed to talk with him.
“So, when we had this conversation, it was after lunch on the day before the game. It was our only conversation that day. I explained to him why he wasn’t playing.
“We met and I explained to his why he wasn’t a rookie so he wouldn’t be surprised. In my office I told him that it was better not for strategy reasons; I would keep him for half-time if necessary.
“Cristiano was not happy about it, for obvious reasons. He has been a key player. Is it really a good idea? He said.
“But we had an ordinary conversation. I explained my views to him, and he agreed. We had a normal, open conversation.”
