Crowd-Sourced’s satellite navigation app Waze, developed in partnership with a community safety group, has partnered to alleviate women’s fears about traveling in the dark as the UK’s nights get longer.

The partnership with SafeUP will see nearly 130 registered companies recognized as “Safe Spaces,” which provide shelter for women, non-binary and cisgender people who feel vulnerable when traveling alone.

According to SafeUP research, about 63 percent of women “always” or “often” feel unsafe walking alone, with nearly 50 percent feeling unsafe walking alone after nightfall—even in a crowded public place.

The so-called Safe Places, which will be branded location pins for drivers and passengers, will continue to be available until February next year.

“The start of the Christmas party season will see millions of revelers return to the streets to celebrate. We know that women and non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals often put their lives on hold during the winter months in favor of staying home and staying safe,” said Ulyana Guseva, Senior Director of Industry at Waze. .

“This partnership is designed to support both drivers and pedestrians traveling this winter, enabling them to take back control of their daily lives and, hopefully, making them feel safer.”
