Rail strikes in the UK
Over 40,000 train workers are expected to strike in the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT), over four days during December.
These dates are:
- Tuesday, December 13th
- Wed, 14 Dec
- Friday 16th December
- Saturday 17 December
These strikes are national and will affect trains all across the country.
An overtime ban will also apply from Sunday, Dec 18th and will continue through Monday January 2nd.
The RMT said of the recent strikes: “Despite all the efforts of our negotiators, it is clear that the government is directly interfering with our attempts to reach a settlement.
To allow for intense negotiations to end the dispute, the union had suspended the previous strike. Network Rail did not offer a better offer of terms, wages, and jobs to our members in the two weeks that followed talks.
Network Rail chief negotiator Tim Schoeffler stated: “Nobody can ignore the precarious financial position in which rail finds itself.
“The multiplication makes this gap larger and the task of finding a solution more difficult than ever.
Only through reform, which won’t lead to anyone losing work, can savings be made that can then be converted to a better offer. Despite some progress in the last two weeks we still haven’t made that level of progress.
“We won’t give up and hope the RMT will come back to the negotiating table with more realistic assessments of the situation.”
On December 11th & 12th West Coast Avanti roads may be affected by the planned strikeAlso by RMT.

NHS nurse strikes
Nursing staff affiliated with the Royal College of Nursing will strike in Thursday, December 15th Then there’s the Tuesday, 20 Dec.
The dispute centers on nurses’ salaries and patient safety. RCN claims that “patient care has been compromised” by low staffing levels.
The strikes will occur in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (not Scotland like the RCN). He is currently back at the negotiating table with the Scottish government).
Pat Cullen, RCN General secretary, said that it had been over two weeks since ministers confirmed our members felt such injustice that they would strike.
My offer of formal negotiations was turned down and the ministers instead chose to strike. They have the power to stop this by having serious discussions that address our disagreement.
“Nursing staff are tired of being taken for granted, enough of low wages and insecure levels of staffing, enough of not being able to give our patients the care they deserve.”
However, not all employees who have been given the mandate to take industrial action are going to opt out.
RCN Add“Not all members employers with a mandate will be invited to strike at those first two dates. This first stage could be the beginning of a longer period.
