After London banned Qatar’s advertising from its transport network, Qatar is said to be reviewing its investment.
According to The Financial Times, a person involved with the country review reported that TfL had contacted Q22, the World Cup overseeing body, to inform them about the ban this week.
Qatar replied that it was “reviewing its current investments” in London and was “examining investment opportunities elsewhere in the UK, according to the report.
TfL’s decision to remove advertisements from buses, taxis, and tubes is believed to be related to concerns about Qatari human rights record, anti-homosexual laws, and treatment of migrant workers.
According to the source, the TfL ban was “interpreted by the mayor’s office as a message that Qatari businesses are not welcome here in London.”
The largest investor in London is the Gulf state through its sovereign wealth fund.
The Shard, Britain’s tallest structure, is owned by Qatar Investment Authority. Harrods department store in Knightsbridge is also owned.
The fund is also a coowner of Canary Wharf. It also owns 20% of Heathrow shares.
