Fans were prohibited from dressing up in Crusader costumes for the World Cup match between England & the United States in Qatar.
According to The Times: Fans wearing chain mail with plastic swords or shields emblazoned in St George’s Cross were told they would not be allowed into Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor north of Doha.
“Designers crusaders in the Arab context can be offensive to Muslims,” the newspaper quoted FIFA as saying.
Kick It Out, an antidiscrimination group, also advised fans to not wear fancy dress costumes depicting knights and crusaders. This was in response to the religious wars waged by Christians against Muslims during Middle Ages.
A spokeswoman for the group said: “We advise fans attending FIFA World Cup matches that some clothing, such as costumes representing knights or crusaders, may not be welcome in Qatar and other Muslim countries.
A Twitter video showed two people dressed in crusader attires, and security personnel being denied entry to a Qatari stadium.
After defeating Iran 6-2 on Monday, The Three Lions will take on Team USA tonight at 7pm UK time.
