After a conservative backlash, a student art workshop for men “tired of white CIS CIS men” was cancelled.
Flyers about Gettysburg College, which is a private university located near the Civil War battlefield in southern Pennsylvania, were published last week. They invited students to express themselves through drawing and writing as part a one-student project.
“Sick and tired of white cis men?” Flyers stated that you could draw or write about it. “cis,” an abbreviation for “cisgender,” is used to refer to non-transgender individuals.
College authorities intervened after receiving complaints from the Young America’s Foundation, which recruits and trains young conservative activists at universities across America.
A college spokesperson stated independentIt declined to endorse the workshop and asked the student “restructure” it. However, it declined to say whether any college policies had been violated.
The spokesperson said, “The college was made aware of a post posted by students on the afternoon of November 10. The post was created for a student project and was not approved either by Peace and Justice Studies or the college.
“Faculty leaders in Peace and Justice Studies have asked students to think about their goals and restructure their project accordingly. The flyers have been removed from the event because it is no longer being planned or created.
“Any community of any size will have a wide range in opinions. This creates a productive learning environment, but it also means that there will be occasions where the opinions expressed are controversial or incompatible with the values of the community.”
The spokesperson declined to identify the person responsible for cancelling the event, the poster takers, or whether any disciplinary action had been taken by the college against the student.
They stated that the student was “instructed to” examine the college’s free speech policies and rules for event flyers. which states That “it is not the role of the college to protect individuals from thoughts and opinions that they find unwelcome, hateful, uncivil, or even deeply offensive.”
These rules also prevent students from engaging in harassment, which is defined as creating a hostile environment for other people on campus, or “biased behaviour,” defined as targeting individuals or groups with “offensive” statements or actions based on their identities.
The student who organized it did not respond to our request for comment.
“This event was clearly designed to encourage prejudice against students of a certain race, gender, or sexuality at Gettysburg College.” YAF . saidOn November 10, he added that members from the Gettysburg chapter had filed complaints through college’s bias reporting process.
One student in their last academic year Fox News saidThey “were not at any surprise that a post like this was put up in college,” citing an outdoor drag event held on campus last year.
“Normally, the discourse on posters like this one is more inclusive of the target groups of students,” said the student. “But this discourse is just divisive.” “Campus faculty always advocates unity among students on campus but does not actually do anything to activate that unity.
“The school should not allow such rhetoric, as it boldly and explicitly challenges what they want from their students.”
according to New York timesYAF is partially funded by donations from wealthy conservatives like Richard, Helen DeVos and Tom Clancy.
