Former Minister of Environment George EustisIn a barely convincing attack on EU, he acknowledged that the UK-Australia post Brexit trade agreement was ‘not too good’. Les TrussHis time was spent as Minister for International Trade.
Eustice was a cabinet member under Boris JohnsonTruss was elected prime minister, and he was sent to his back benches.
Eustice spoke during a House of Commons public debate about the Australia and New Zealand agreements.
Eustis blamed Truss for setting an arbitrarily high target. He was international trade secretary from 2019 to 2021.
He warned that unless we admit the failure of the Department of International Trade in the Australia negotiations, we won’t be able learn from future negotiations.
He stated that the first step was to “recognize the fact that the Australian trade agreement is not a very favorable deal for the UK” and added, “It wasn’t due to a lack on my part.”
Eustis went on to say, “The United Kingdom entered into these negotiations holding the strongest hand, holding all the best cards, but sometime in the early summer of 2021 the then Trade Secretary (Truss) made the decision to set an arbitrary target for heads-turning. The Summit was over, and the Group of Seven major industrialized nations had been left behind.
“Actually, at one point the then trade minister asked her the corresponding figure from Australia what he would need to be able to get an agreement done by the G7, and of course the Australian negotiator very kindly from setting the Australian terms, which then ultimately shaped the deal.”

Eustice also called on the resignation of Crawford Falconer (interim permanent secretary of Department of International Trade), after telling the House of Commons that it was “dissatisfying” to have people who were better at understanding technical trade issues than he.
The former Cabinet minister stated that Falconer’s approach in negotiations was to “accommodate Australian requests even if they were not in the UK’s best interests” and that his advice was “always back down, make new concessions.”
Eustice said he had been a “big admirer” of the British Civil Service. But he added, “I want to comment about staff within the Department of International Trade. Crawford Falconer, who is currently temporary and permanent secretary, is not appropriate for the position.
“His approach has always been to accommodate Australian demands, often when they are against UK interests, his advice has always been to step back and make new concessions and all the time he has resented people who understand technical issues more than he does.
“He has done this work now for several years. I think it would be a good opportunity for him to go forward and get a different kind of negotiator, someone who understands British interests better than I think he was capable of.”
