McDonald’s has announced that plastic cutlery will be replaced by paper spoons and knives.
The fast food giant stated that it hopes the move will result in the elimination of 858 tons annually of plastic.
Chiefs claim that the new cutlery will contain renewable, FSC-certified compressed papers.
This includes the McFlurry spoon, which will become fully recyclable and compostable along with all McDonald’s packaging by 2024.
It will be available in England and Wales beginning Tuesday, following the example of Ireland, Scotland and Northern Ireland, which have already moved to paper.

“As a company, we are committed to taking action on packaging and waste and increasing our use of sustainable materials,” said Nina Prichard, president of sustainable and ethical sourcing at McDonald’s.
“We are excited to announce another step in eliminating single-use plastics. It’s great that we’re turning McFlurry spoons into this paper material.
