Questions have been raised regarding the Home Secretary’s use a military helicopter to tour chaotic immigration centers along the south coast of England.
Soila BravermanHe arrived at Manston immigration center near Ramsgate on Thursday in a Chinook helicopter. He had previously visited Dover to visit the Jet Foil West immigration facility, and interviewed the Coast Guard.
Distance between Dover and Manston: 20 miles. It takes approximately 40 minutes to drive.
According to defense analysts writing for the UK Defense Journal, the Chinook costs about £3,500 per hour to fly.
According to Boeing, the helicopter can reach speeds of 302 km/h (roughly 187 miles/h).
Braverman and her entourage were taken from the helicopter to a black BMW equipped with tinted windows after landing.
Recent condemnation of the minister’s call for an “invasion” by the influx migrants has been widespread.
According to the Home Office, the minister took the helicopter in order to see the progress made to combat human trafficking in the English Channel.
The flight is understood to have left the Coast Guard headquarters at approximately 1.25pm and returned to shore after 2pm.
Braverman is now under increasing pressure from the illegal conditions at Manston site. At one time, up to 4,000 people were held at Manston for weeks. The site was originally designed to hold 1,600 people for a few hours. After the removal of more than 1,000 people, the number has fallen back to 2,700.
A spokesperson for the Home Office stated that Dan Omoni, Channel Secret Threat Commander, briefed the Home secretary at Dover.
