Mink Nutcharut switches Saraburi for Sheffield, and is aiming high: “I can beat anyone.”

Mink Nutcharut is having a huge run in 2022. She won the Women’s World Championship title and the World Mixed Doubles title, and then turned professional and made the big move to swap Thailand with South Yorkshire.

The 22-year-old won the Women’s World Championship Under-21 four years ago. But, this was not her breakthrough year. She’s now the Champion of Champions. .

Mink’s win in the Mixed World Doubles together with Neil Robertson was a significant moment that she hopes will position her well for the future.

It’s very different to be so close to Neil and to be there for him. It’s quite different to play in teams. There’s more pressure. It’s Rooney if you play behind me. It’s not common. It’s not normal. Neil was amazing.

Mink and Robertson were beaten in their first two matches of the tournament. But, they bounced back on Sunday to win their second match.

She shares her struggles with Thai friends and family, but she smiles almost constantly to hide it.

She said that she misses her so much and that she doesn’t have anyone who travelled with her to her homeland. I still call my mom every single day. I want to make friends. There are a lot of Chinese men here. But some of their English can be difficult and I can’t speak Chinese.

“The way of living is to get up, go training, eat, and then train, then go home to your room. You wake up, go to training, then eat, then train again. But I have Thai people, so that’s okay.

Noppon Saengkham, a Thai superstar, is also based in Sheffield. He has been a tremendous help to Mink. Dechawat Pomjaeng, icon of Thai music, is back on tour and making it easier for her.

Noppon would take me to dinner or lunch when I was in training. Dechawat is now here as well. Noppon at Ding’s Academy is not in Victoria, but we do eat out.

I came to this country in January to spend a month. Nobun was there to show me how I could stay, use the train, and get to other cities. It taught me so much. It is possible to live a normal life if you have enough money. It is expensive. It costs much more than Thailand. In Thailand eating Thai food will be £2, but here it will be £10. Very expensive!

It is nice here, but it is very different than Thailand. A different life. Thai culture is all-day. I can’t eat here all day, some places close at 6 or 7 pm. In Thailand, you can eat whenever and wherever you want.

Mink was able see a portion of the UK during her snooker tour, with a surprising city that most often reminded of her home.

“I went to Leicester because I wanted to qualify,” she said. I’ve been there, they have a temple. I’ve been to Manchester from the airport. Last week, I traveled to Glasgow for the Women’s Championship. Although I didn’t have much time to travel, Glasgow felt a lot like Thailand. I went to work at 5pm and got out at 5pm. There were cars everywhere. But this was Thailand!

Mink is a huge deal in Thailand, particularly in Saraburi where her victory at the Women’s World Championship was celebrated with a spectacular celebration. She even met the Prime Minster thanks to her triumph over Wendy Gans.

Mink said, “Yes. My city offered the biggest congratulations following the World Championships.” It was the first time that Thai snooker had been named world champion.

She was on TV and met the Prime Minister of Thailand. It was amazing! I was amazed!

Mink began her snooker journey at the age 10 in Saraburi at a club owned by her mother. But it wasn’t love at the first sight for Mink, who would go on to become a world champion.

She said that she didn’t like playing the first time she tried it. I was very young and wanted play with my friends. I didn’t want to practice and just go to school to have fun.

My father thinks a lot and wants me to play and train. He said [wagging her finger]”You train because you have competition.” He can play, but he is not very good at it.

She quickly rose to prominence, even though she was only the 147th woman to break the record before her 20th birthday.

“When I go to play in competitions a lot, when I start earning trophies, I was very happy and I thought, yes this is my job and I want to work hard to do more because I wanted money,” she said. “Money for my family was the motivation.

Mink was asked what she would do as a career if she hadn’t discovered snooker. Mink didn’t think about it because, thankfully, she’s pretty good at it.

I wouldn’t have studied snooker if I hadn’t played it. I doubt I would know what I would do if I had.

I think snooker, the money you give and the experience, is my life. It all seems so faraway to me. When I won my first world championship, I thought it was my dream. However, I thought maybe I should have been 24 or 25. But at 22, it is so great!
