The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents La linea del ingenio , a selection of works from the Museum’s Collection, as well as others that are on long-term loan, which can be described as ingenious and experimental.
This exhibition brings together artists of different generations who work with different media and includes some significant pieces from the Collection that have hardly been exhibited, along with others better known to the public. The authors included in the exhibition, of inquisitive nature, employ unusual materials and techniques and many of them playfully defy aesthetic conventions as a manifestation of wit and humor.
Organized thematically, the exhibition dedicates the first room to works that were created outside the
traditional context of the artist’s studio and unusual artistic processes. Some of the works in this gallery inhabit the space in an unexpected way, such as Untitled (Alabaster Room, 1993), by Cristina Iglesias, which integrates the architecture of a corner of the gallery into her presentation.
The translucent alabaster sheets of the work float gracefully, leaning gently at both ends while altering the light, both from their surroundings and from the space. For its part, Object for Reflection (Object for Reflection, 2017), by Alyson Shotz, consists of innumerable pieces of perforated aluminum joined by steel rings. The second room of the exhibition includes a selection of figurative works that illustrate the many ways in which artists treat the subject of the human form. Serial repetition through several canvases or in a single composition is the strategy used by some authors gathered in this gallery.
These works, created over a period of fifty years, reveal different ways of approaching figuration, revealing the formal and conceptual experimentation that underlies representation.
The last room brings together a selection of abstract works that are inventive in their methods and materials, taking the different artistic media beyond their limits. Some authors adopt non-traditional materials, such as commercial paint, ceramics, or blackboard and chalk. His pieces invite the observer to consider the choice of materials and methods by the artists and how they offer them different possibilities.
